Moravians in Mission 
 
           Together with the other Staten Island Moravian Churches, Great Kills Moravian participates in mission projects - putting our faith into action.  We hosted CROP Walks in October of 2006 & 2007, a blood drive in 2007, coordinate an ongoing prayer shawl ministry and planned 4  mission trips to the Mississippi Gulf Coast...3 in 2007, and 1 in 2008. The most recent mission trip was from May 11-17 2008 in Baton Rouge Louisiana to work with Habitat for Humanity.
 
Prayer Shawl Ministry 
                                  Attention all knitters, crocheters and wannabees:

Great Kills Moravian Church coordinates a prayer shawl ministry as a Moravians in Mission project. Established in April 2007, to date we have created and distributed 110 prayer shawls!  Our mission: is to create prayer shawls and weave into these shawls hope, comfort , a sense of peace, our love, prayers and God's presence -- thorugh the work of  our hands.  It is our hope that the recipient would be uplifted and inspired by our gift and that whether giver or receiver, that your own walk with our Lord would be strengthened for 'it is more blessed to give than receive.'  Acts 20:35
 
Prayer shawls are created for anyone going through any life transition.  We make shawls mostly by request for those in our community facing bereavement, illness, divorce, job loss/change, discouragement or other challenge as well as, marriage, birth/adoption, or graduation etc.  
 
We gather on the second Monday of each month to knit or crochet prayer shawls, praying for the recipients as we make the shawls. The prayer shawls will be given away to people who might be comforted or uplifted by them. We will supply all the materials, although if you have your own needles please bring them. We raised almost $2000 to fight hunger around the world with 1/4 of the money raised going to Project Hosptality here on Staten Island!

Mississippi -

Rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina

 

In 2007 we sent 3 teams to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to help with the rebuilding effort.  This year we sent a team down to Baton Rouge, partnering with Habitat for Humanity.  Even now, thousands of people are still not back in their homes.

 

Our teams work hard, try lots of new foods, and have a great time.
